BSNL awards NGN contract to Sterlite Technologies

Indian telco Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has awarded a contract worth INR 2.5bn (US$ 51.8mn) to Sterlite Technologies for the provision of next-generation Gigabit-capable Passive Optical Networking (GPON) technology.

The new technology is expected to enable BSNL to offer high-speed Internet, linear and on-demand IPTV and other value-added services. Seven equipment vendors, including Ericsson, Nokia Siemens Networks, ZTE and Indian Telephone Industries (ITI) had bid for the contract, according to reports in news portal Sify.com.

BSNL reportedly plans to connect up to 600,500 customers to the new network once installed. Sterlite Technologies is headquartered in India and backed by Chinese vendor Huawei
